Captain Lorimer Burn February 2017
Lorimer joined the Royal Navy in 1967 at age 21, specialising as a helicopter pilot, flying Wasp & Wessex 3 helicopters from Royal Navy ships all around the world.
After 12 years he left the Navy to join British Airways Helicopters at Aberdeen, Scotland, flying the S61 and Chinook helicopters to the North Sea oil rigs.
In 1988 Lorimer left the helicopter world to join British Midland Airways (recently bmi, now B.A.), flying first the Boeing 737, and then the Airbus A320 series aircraft out of Heathrow around the UK and Europe.
Lorimer retired from flying on his 60th birthday in 2006. He has been flying for 40 years, and 18,000 hours. He has not darkened a flight deck since then, but believes he now has the best of all worlds, in that he spends his retirement in speaking to local clubs and organisations and on Cruise Ships as a Guest Speaker. Lorimer is listed in The Women's Institute Handbook for Surrey/Hampshire and the Rotary Speaker Directory for London and the South East. The subject – of course – is Aviation. Lorimer also speaks at Secondary Schools Career Days on the subjects of Civil Aviation and the Armed Forces.
Lorimer at present has ten separate, 45-minute, media-rich presentations ranging from his flying experience in the Royal Navy 40 years ago, to the history of the Flying Boat, to the technicalities of the Airbus A320. Please see the Presentation page for a detailed list.
Lorimer, until recently, was a member of Toastmasters, an organisation which helps members to enhance their public speaking abilities.
